The playoffs are set and FC Dallas will take on the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night. This week’s edition of Morning Clippings features FCD CEO Doug Quinn sharing his knowledge of sports with SMU students, a UK scouting report on Brek Shea, and why FCD and NYRB are playing in the Wild Card game instead of the MLS Cup.

Wednesday, October 19: Team of the Week: Week 31 (MLSSoccer.com)
It was a solid week of MLS play for Brek Shea and FC Dallas. After helping FC Dallas clinch a spot in the 2011 playoffs with a win over Chicago, Shea recorded a goal and an assist in a 2-0 victory over Vancouver. Shea was rewarded by being named to Week 31’s MLSSoccer.com Team of the Week.

Thursday, October 20: SMU students kick it with FC Dallas CEO (The Daily Campus)
FC Dallas President & CEO Doug Quinn understands the work that goes into running a professional soccer club. And as a graduate of SMU in 1985, he understands how difficult the path from college to the professional sports world can be. Quinn took the time last week to discuss his career journey with students in the Applied Physiology and Sport Management (APSM) program at SMU.

Tuesday, October 25: FCD, NYRB Had Different Season Outlooks (SB Nation)
FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls are meeting in the playoffs like many thought they might, but many expected the meeting to be in the MLS Cup Final. A proven FCD squad in 2010 and a starting XI full of international stars for the Red Bulls seemingly had these teams destined for the MLS Cup. But fatigue, a congested schedule and injuries all contributed to a rough season for FCD, while Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe seemed reluctant to use his bench – a strategy gave the Red Bulls a league record 16 draws.

Tuesday, October 25: As Brek Shea Looks Abroad, It Is Clear That He Is Unlike Any American Before Him (SB Nation)
Ryan Rosenblatt takes his shot at nailing down a comparison for American star Brek Shea. Unfortunately, Shea is too unique of a talent to compare to any previous American footballer. Jozy Altidore, Eddie Johnson and DeMarcus Beasley are the most hyped U.S. transfers, with Altidore’s New York Red Bulls receiving a $10 million transfer fee, the most for any U.S. player at the time. Rosenblatt believes that Welsh star Garreth Bale is the most accurate comparison for the young winger. Their style, speed, and versatility all make the two strikingly similar.
