FC Dallas players were back in the news last week after becoming the first MLS team to win in Mexico. Here are the highlights from the week that was.
Monday, August 15: Bruno Guarda talks Brazilian goal celebration (ExtraTime Radio)
Two days after scoring his first goal in an FC Dallas uniform,
Maicon Santos
was the talk of South America for being the latest Brazilian to break out the “Joao Sorrisao,” which translates to “john big smile” goal celebration. During his six-minute interview with ExtraTime Radio hosts Simon Borg, Nick Firchau, Jason Saghini and Greg Lalas, FCD midfielder and fellow Brazilian Bruno Guarda explains the origin of the celebration, his reasons for pushing Santos to do the “Joao Sorrisao,” and which teammate of his he would like to see try out the dance.

Wednesday, August 17: Brek Shea a “nightmare” for opposing defenses (Miami Herald)
In this feature from the Miami Herald, sports reporter Brian Westfall takes a look back at Brek Shea’s performance vs. Mexico on August 10th, quoting LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan as saying “It’s a nightmare to play against him.” Westfall notes how easily Shea handled the media swarm following the match, laughing as he was asked about his experiment on defense early in the 2011 season.

Thursday, August 18: Kevin Hartman on FCD’s win in Mexico (USA TODAY)
Following FC Dallas’ historic 1-0 win against Pumas UNAM in Mexico City last Wednesday, Kevin Hartman spoke to Roxanna Scott from USA TODAY. Hartman, who made several key saves in the CONCACAF Champions League match, was quick to credit the level of play in Mexico for the lack of MLS success south of the border in recent years. Hartman credited FC Dallas’ abundance of experience for getting a result away from home.

Thursday, August 18: Brek Shea gets BaD from Mexico (1310 AM The Ticket)
Budding superstar Brek Shea called into popular local sports talk radio the Bob and Dan Show from Mexico following FCD’s win at Pumas. Shea talked about what it was like to be the first MLS team to win in Mexico, as well as the effects of the atmosphere and altitude in Mexico City. The young midfielder also discusses his U.S. Men’s National Team call-up, and his friendship with fellow Texas native and soccer star Clint Dempsey.
Thursday, August 18: Daniel Hernandez talks tough (ExtraTime Radio)
The day after FC Dallas made history by becoming the first Major League Soccer team to defeat a Mexican team on Mexican soil, Daniel Hernandez spoke with the hosts of ExtraTime Radio. Hernandez spoke his mind about the critics detracting from FC Dallas’ 1-0 win over Pumas UNAM because the champions of Mexico fielded a team of mostly reserve players. The 15-minute interview also discusses the reaction of Hernandez’s friends and family who are fans of Pumas and the enormity of the win for MLS.

Friday, August 19: Richard Sanchez on the “rise” (ESPN RISE)
Before training last Friday, Richard Sanchez completed his first photo shoot since turning pro. The photos will be used as the cover of the October issue of ESPN RISE, ESPN's high school/teen sports magazine, which is using the “Teen Sports Around the World” theme. The editors at ESPN RISE chose Sanchez based on his recent success with Mexico at the U-17 World Cup and his soccer success in general as an American citizen. The shoot included a profile on him as part of the international feature in the magazine.

Friday, August 19: Tim Cowlishaw profiles Brek Shea (Dallas Morning News)
The venerable DFW sports reporter first took notice of Brek Shea in the recent U.S draw with Mexico, mentioning the young midfielder on ESPN’s “Around the Horn.” In this Dallas Morning News profile, Cowlishaw hails the College Station native as a local sports hero worth watching, noting that no other DFW franchise has a Texan as their marquee player.
