Open Cup Overview
In case you're new around here, here's a brief overview of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
First played in 1914, the Open Cup is the U.S.'s oldest ongoing national soccer tournament and it's open to any professional or amateur team affiliated with U.S. Soccer. Basically, a team from any league in the country can compete (separate to its respective league play) in hopes of making it all the way through the single-game-knockout competition to reach the final. In all, the Open Cup features eight rounds (First Round, Second Round, Third Round, Round of 32, Round of 16, etc).
This year, 16 of MLS's 30 teams will enter the Open Cup at the Round of 32 stage: FC Dallas, Austin FC, Charlotte FC, Chicago Fire FC, D.C. United, Houston Dynamo FC, Minnesota United FC, Nashville SC, New England Revolution, New York City FC, New York Red Bulls, Orlando City SC, Philadelphia Union, Portland Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes and St. Louis City SC.
If FC Dallas wins Wednesday night, they'll advance to the Round of 16 where they'll face the winner of New York Red Bulls vs. Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC of the USL Championship.
FC Dallas in the Open Cup
FC Dallas is one of the most successful MLS teams in U.S. Open Cup history having won the tournament twice (1997 and 2016) and twice finished as runners-up (2005 and 2007). In 1999, the tournament was renamed in honor of Lamar Hunt for his immense contributions to growing soccer in the U.S.
FCD Legend and Club Ambassador Kenny Cooper is the second-top scorer in modern Open Cup history (1995-present) with 13 goals, three behind Sébastien Le Toux's 16.
All-Time Open Cup Record: 38-24-6
All-Time Open Cup Home Record: 23-7-3
All-Time Open Cup Away Record: 15-17-3
Opponent Outlook: AV Alta FC
FC Dallas welcomes a brand-new opponent to Toyota Stadium to kickoff its Open Cup campaign. AV Alta FC, a USL League One club based in Southern California, was founded in late 2023 and began play this season. Coached by Brian Kleiban, Alta has recorded a 2-3-0 record to begin its inaugural USL campaign. In the Open Cup, they've recorded three wins in a row beginning with a 3-1 victory over USL2 side Ventura County Fusion followed by a 2-1 win over LAFC2 of MLS NEXT Pro. In the previous round, Alta upset USL Championship club Orange County SC 4-2 in penalties following a 2-2 draw in regulation. Longtime FC Dallas/North Texas SC fans will recognize at least one name on Alta's roster as former Homegrown goalkeeper Carlos Avilez now plies his trade for head coach Kleiban and has all 10 games for his new club in all competitions.
